Help me give my students a calming corner—a dedicated space where students can go to self-regulate and return to their learning with a clear mind. Having a sensory tent will provide a private calming retreat.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These tools will help create a calming corner can be an essential tool for children with Autism; it will allow an opportunity for children to regulate their emotions, reduce anxiety, and prepare them for the classwork ahead. These designated spaces offer a safe and sensory friendly retreat in which a child that is having a difficult time can go and take a break. These tools already have a home in each of my classrooms.
The items requested will create a peaceful environment; a child entering this serene and quiet place will be able to regulate themselves so that they are ready for work.
The tent and lighting will provide a safe and private place for the child to decompress. The children I work with are each unique and special individuals, who although have the same classification of ASD, each requires something different. This calming corner, however, is something that each child will benefit from. A child who is demonstrating excessive movements and needs to calm down, or a student who is frustrated that things are not going his/her way. The calming corner will offer that safe space. In the end each child will demonstrate a more productive end result.
We all need a break from time to time, children with ASD, often have difficulties with communicating exactly what they need, so having a designated calming corner will provide this down time and facilitate work readiness. This will benefit every student in the class.
