This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Pre-K students are full of energy, curiosity, and big emotions. At this young age, they are just beginning to learn how to name their feelings and handle them in healthy ways. That’s why I want to create a Calm and Cozy Corner - a peaceful space where students can go to relax, breathe, and reset when emotions feel overwhelming.

In this cozy space, students will have access to soft seating like a bean bag chair and floor pillows.

They’ll find calming items like weighted stuffed animals, sensory bottles, and fidget tools to help them regulate their feelings. I’ll also include a mirror for self-soothing and SEL books to help them learn about emotions in age-appropriate ways.

We’ll use tools like a feelings chart to help children identify how they’re feeling, and a soft blanket or plush toy to comfort them when they need a break. Adding a soft, color-changing light will make this space extra special and peaceful.

Having a dedicated area like this empowers students to develop self-regulation, emotional awareness, and empathy. It’s a small space with a big purpose—and it will make a huge difference for my Pre-K students.
