This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Have you ever found calm? What does calm look like to you? Does it involve sitting still? Deep breathing? Taking a walk? What about fidgeting on a stability ball or playing with kinetic sand? My group of exceptional 4th-grade neurodivergent learners find calm in extraordinary ways. For my learners, calm can look like fidgeting on flexible seating options such as wobbly or stability ball chairs. Sometimes, calm can look like movement breaks after long stretches of academic work. The students can often find calming moments with a small fidget, a puzzle, or noise-canceling headphones. Finding calm in any environment is never easy, but I hope to make it easier for my learners.
A calm and soothing classroom environment can make all the difference to children.
Although playing kinetic sand, wearing noise-canceling headphones to filter out loud noise, putting together puzzles, or bouncing on stability balls while listening to lessons may not appear soothing to some, these activities can be relaxing for some neurodivergent learners. These activities can allow learners to find options to regulate their emotions when overwhelmed or find an outside stimulus to regulate something as small as their balance. I hope to give my students additional tools to be even more successful by creating a calm and soothing classroom environment suited to their needs. By donating to my project, you will help my learners increase their attention to academic tasks and their ability to practice self-regulation by finding moments of calm when possible.
