Calm and Collected in Our Very Own Cool Down Space

My Project

COVID-19 has taken so much from so many people; we have lost time, opportunities and loved ones. Like many others, my students were not immune to severe loss and turmoil that most of the world has been going through. As a self-contained teacher our classroom doors have always been open; regardless of if schools were virtual or in-person.

Our classroom is our home; a safe space where my students feel loved and supported.

For many of my students our room is the only place that provides that constant sense of security that has been lacking since the pandemic started. Some days are harder than others and I often find myself struggling to meet their social/emotional needs.

Our classroom is lacking a designated area where students can go when they a break or time to process through their ever-changing emotions. Through funding my project I will be able to finally create that space. Students will be able to take some time to process independently or one-on-one with staff while relaxing on a swinging hammock chair, comfy beanbag or fluffy carpet. Items like the oil diffuser, color changing floor lamp and rotating starry night projector will help to set a more calming, peaceful atmosphere.

I am proud of the growth I've seen in my students and it's exciting to see them begin to work towards becoming independent, caring young people. Being able to give them a space like our Cool Down Room will help them on their social/emotional journey as we work together to get back to a place of normalcy.
