My students represent one of the most diverse student bodies in the state of Indiana. Nearly 80% of them receive free or reduced lunch and many struggle academically. That said, they are exceptionally hard workers and dedicated to improving their academic and social outcomes.
Over the past two school years, our students have had the highest growth of all students in the district.
We are continuing to invest in this growth through the implementation of the Developmental Designs approach to teaching. This focuses on relationship and student leadership.
We are extremely proud of them and excited for a new school year. We know that when they have the community investing in them and their ideas, they are able to accomplish their goals.
My Project
My students in Advisory class (a team-building period) have requested that we have yoga mats for the classroom. The period starts with a Circle of Power and Respect. In this circle we debrief the day, find a place of calm, and actively participate in fun, relaxing, and motivating activities. During this time the yoga mats would be used to teach to the students' request of active breathing and centering activities for a calmer and more relaxed reaction to the world around us.
One of the main goals of this project is to invest in their first idea for an active and respectful activity to work on as a group.
They have requested to learn more breathing techniques and stretches since a student-led lesson in the first week of school.
