This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students are visual learners and benefit from visuals to help them learn and retain information. We use many computer-based intervention programs in our classroom. My students are challenged by typical keyboards, as the characters are difficult to distinguish.

Students in my special needs' classroom rely heavily on visuals to learn and retain information.

Many have not learned basic typing skills due to inaccessible keyboards. They simply have difficulty distinguishing between characters on the keyboards. Most of my students love using the computer, but become frustrated with ill-fitting headphones that slide off their heads. They also have difficulty tracking using the mouse and would benefit with a smaller one that helps develop stronger fine motor skills. Many use the computer as an preferred accommodation when given written assignments. My students attend a large school. The majority of students are second language learners and come from low income households.

My Project

I am requesting 4 sets of color-coded keyboards, mice, and headphones for our class computers. These resources will give my students visual access to the keyboard characters and enable them to effectively use our computer programs . The headphones will help block out distracting classroom noises while they work independently at the computers. The child-sized mice will help them navigate the programs more easily. My students will use the color-coded keyboards to learn typing skills. This is vital, as many of them use word processing programs in lieu of written tasks.

These kid-sized computer peripherals will help my students become more successful and independent when using the computer for their intervention programs.

The color-coded keyboards makes learning typing skills more accessible for my visual learners. Kid-sized mice will assist those with motor deficits. The smaller headphones will make computer tasks less frustrating for students by providing a better fit.
