My Students

We cannot expect students to love reading if we don't provide them with organized child-friendly libraries. Help us with storage for our library and a place to read our books! Our library has been built over the years by donations from students and my own now grown children.

I serve two third grade classes with a total of 40 students.

I teach reading, language, and social studies. We live in an economically disadvantaged community and most of the student body is eligible for free lunch. My students are hard-working and highly motivated despite many struggles they and their families face each day. We are also a military town, and this causes concerns and often separations from parents which other counties and states do not have to face. They are eager to learn and enthusiastic about school. They come to school every day willing to give their 100% in anything I ask them to do. They are an inspiration to us all.

My Project

These resources will greatly improve my students' experiences with books and libraries. Without a place to store our library that will make it easier to find their favorite genre or their book level, books cannot be selected or used properly. Using the Help Yourself Book Boxes, I can level the books or organize the library by genre. With these great resources my students will be able to browse through our library freely and choose a story to read. It also will be easy for them to place their books back where they belong. The bean bags will help when they want to curl up in the library with their favorite author. Students will learn how to select a book, enjoy the magic of reading in a quiet place, and clean up after themselves by placing the book back in its correct box. As you can see from the photograph, the buckets we have are overflowing and too small. The boxes would provide them with a clear vision of what and where to find their leveled books, or favorite genre.

I have spent years in collecting 1st-5th grade books for a classroom library.

It is an ever-growing place for learning about worlds away from the often times difficult lives of my students. I want to provide a safe environment that promotes a love of reading. With an organized library and reading place we can achieve this.
