Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher in a city school in Illinois. My students live in low-income households from a beautifully diverse area of Chicago. Hispanic, African-American, and Arab families send their children to our school. Many of my students are bilingual and are raised in homes with single parents, multiple siblings and/or grandparents.
Every year I witness the magic of becoming a reader in each child.
I begin the school year excited to meet the eager, active children that will occupy my classroom. The students learn to understand how reading "works", to love books, and to write and speak like their favorite authors.
My Project
I discovered the author Mo Willems five years ago. It started with "Knuffle Bunny". As a teacher of young children and a mother, the three book series touched my heart. Then I found the pigeon series...A must-read-aloud for any first grade teacher. The students actually talk to the pigeon as you read it...priceless! But then the Elephant and Piggie books made their way to my classroom. Our room has not been the same since.
Piggie and Gerald live in my classroom.
The students bring the characters to life as they read with feeling and passion. The two friends have experiences that my first graders relate to. Their simple view of friendship and the world is in-tune with my students' perspective. The new titles in this project will be read over and over by my students now and in years to come.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
