This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Moving to a new country means leaving a home and friends behind. Even under the best circumstances, it can be challenging, especially for middle school students. The first thing I want a new student to feel when they walk into my classroom, is welcomed. Because I teach English, I put a great deal of emphasis on reading, and require an extensive reading log to be turned in each week. Unfortunately, my collection of Spanish chapter books pales in comparison to those in English. I know and understand that reading a book in its original language is ideal, but some of my students know very little English. My goal is to have a variety of chapter books in Spanish for my students to read. In doing so, not only will they be able to hold on to their culture, but they will also feel confident enough to fill out a reading log.

In addition to helping my Spanish speaking students, having Spanish chapter books in my classroom library will also benefit those students who do not speak Spanish.

While reading the books, they will learn about the Spanish culture and learn new vocabulary words. Reading in another language will also help them internalize their first language. Clearly, reading will improve their literacy in any language. By providing the needed chapter books in Spanish, all of my students will be given that opportunity.

Each morning and afternoon, when I greet my middle school students at the door, I see the awesome faces of students who are ready for adventure. Many of my students do not travel farther than 10 miles away from their homes. Reading takes them places. The books on my shelves provide an opportunity for that traveling to take place. With your help, my students can see the world.
