My Students

Middle school is the best age to teach, in my opinion! Students at this age are for the most part still excited about learning and are willing to try new ideas. I have been teaching for over 20 years at the same level and I am still amazed at the things my students can accomplish with the right encouragement.

My students are curious!

They love to try to figure out how things work. Time and again, they go beyond what I am asking of them to expand on what they are learning. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student struggle with a concept or an idea and finally seeing them succeed.

My Project

I plan to teach Code.org's CS Discoveries curriculum to my middle school students in the 2020-2021 school year. The last unit of the curriculum involves a design challenge where students use a Circuit Playground Express by Adafruit to create their own design. Having one Circuit Playground per student will ensure that everyone has ample time to go through the iterative design process of coming up with an idea, carrying it out, testing it, and then revising it.

Computer science teaches so many skills that are necessary in the workforce.

These skills include problem solving, perseverance, critical thinking, and communication. Seeing a student successfully work through a difficult problem by troubleshooting, communicating with peers, and critically thinking is incredible! Nothing hurts this process more than a lack of adequate supplies.
