Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach fourth grade at a school in inner-city Los Angeles. My students are brimming with curiosity and work hard to achieve their academic goals. As part of an environmental science magnet school, I strive to offer a hands-on, inquiry-based, experiential science curriculum. My school is located in an urban environment, and my students haven't had much experience with outdoor learning. This project aims to get my students outside to discover all the exciting wildlife that exists right under their noses.

My Project

My class is going to start an urban birding project in inner-city Los Angeles. We will begin by studying the birds in our school yard and then extend those observations by taking regular field trips to local parks around the city. We will engage in Citizen Science through eBird, an app developed by Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology that allows every day citizens to help professional scientists collect data on local bird populations. Students will learn about birds, and design their own inquiry based science investigations derived from their own observations and wonderings. They will learn how to design both experimental and observational investigations, collect reliable data and present their findings to real audiences. We want to place bird feeders and a birdbath to attract more birds to our urban schoolyard.
