This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Over the last decade or more, handwriting has not been taught in many schools and, as a result, the current middle school and high school population have lost an incredibly valuable skill. Many students have lost much of their hand dexterity. Studies have shown that a hand-to-head connection supports stronger knowledge retention skills.
Fostering a dependence on technology decreases the students’ ability to have enough strength to hold a writing utensil, build a strong phonemic vocabulary to decipher upper-level words, or even be able to sign their name on a legal document.
Historical documents are written in calligraphic script and we risk losing the ability to read and understand many historical records.
Students participate in Calligraphy Club as an enrichment opportunity weekly in my classroom. It is my hope to provide each member with their own pen and supplies to create beautiful lettering on their own.
