Called to the Classroom: Future Teachers in the Making

Help me give my students in the Teacher Cadet class supplies they will need for their binder portfolio that can be presented for college scholarship interviews and college education course credits.

My Project

For the past 7 years, I have had the privilege and honor to teach high school students in the Teacher Cadet class who want to pursue their college degree in education and return to our small rural community to teach. We call these students our “Scholar Teachers”, and they join our program as juniors and remain with us until their senior or super senior year if they are part of the E. C. High School. These young men and women have a heart and passion for teaching and also a deep desire to make an impact on generations of students who come through our school system.

This year we have one of our largest Teacher Cadet classes ever and unfortunately it is at a time when our school system has the least amount of money.

We are one of the poorest counties and we are feeling the impact of budget cuts. Up until this year, our Scholar Teachers have been able to have a limitless supply of color copies for their very important portfolios. These portfolios, which hold a year's worth of their work in 2-inch binders, have been a staple of the class. These portfolios have the potential to influence college scholarship selection committees and earn them college credit for educational course work. The portfolios are made up of everything they create: lesson plans, presentations, student worksheets and handouts, photos of their teaching and working with their students during their internships at our local elementary and middle schools and even photos of posters and projects they have created. This year though, we can no longer use the school's color printer, and without these supplies, our potential future teachers and their creativity will be limited.
