Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

7th Grade Science Students need to get to the California Science Center I teach in a very low-income neighborhood in California. We do not have any science funding since the focus is on math and language arts. Last year about 30% of my students were unable to pay for the bus to go to the California Science Center. Many of my students have never been out of their community and rarely get a chance to see things outside of their neighborhood.

Every year I take my 7th graders to the California Science Center. We spend the day completing a life science assignment at the center. Students are able to view the large mechanized "Human Body Tess" that explains homeostasis. Students see displays about the heart, digestive system, nervous system, reproductive system and other systems of the body. These displays are far more interesting and detailed than anything I can provide in the classroom. They correspond to our life science curriculum. They also see a display on alcohol and the consequences of driving drunk. I have gone on this field trip for many years, but last year about 30% of my students were unable to afford the cost of transportation to Los Angeles. I expect that this year the percentage of students unable to attend will be higher.

I need to pay for two school buses to transport students to the California Science Center. The cost of admission is free if we can only get there!

Please consider donating to this science field trip. With your help, I will be able to offer an experience that will enrich their 7th grade science year. Most importantly, I can offer this field trip to all students regardless of their ability to pay.
