Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am currently a 12th-grade English teacher. I am interested in getting a school garden started at our school site that will be tended to by our students! Currently, my students are working on a Youth Participatory Action Research Project that centers around the reciprocal relationship we hold with the land and water.
Students will explore how they tend to the land/plants through their research of available green spaces in their communities, California Native plants, and environmental/climate justice.
They will conduct their research on current western environmental conservationist theory and on traditional indigenous ecological knowledge. We want students to be able to build a garden that can be past down to future class generations. They will learn the benefits of California native plants, how to plant and tend to these plant friends, and lastly how planting is part of activism in some communities!
A school garden would be a wonderful opportunity for students to put their research into action. We want students to reflect on how our relationship with the land reflects our relationship with each other. This project will help produce plants that are essential for California ecosystems, such as planting milkweed for the monarch butterflies. Additionally, we would like to start growing edible California plants such as miner's lettuce, so that in the future we can provide produce for a few community members.
