My Students
Imagine sitting in your first science class of high school. Already nervous, the idea of not having the necessary school supplies to be successful adds an extra level of anxiety. Many of my students do not have the financial means to afford scientific calculators, something crucial for my class.
I currently work at a high school in Maryland.
I am so lucky to work in an extremely diverse high school, with students from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
I teach an introductory science class with students who are just learning English and/or have special needs. Unfortunately, a lot of them do not have calculators. Calculators are necessary for a lot of the activities that we do and I hate to see any of my students at a disadvantage.
My Project
A lot of my students have smartphones, which include a calculator. I have permitted the use of cell phone calculators during class activities, but they are not allowed during tests. I would like students to have the experience of using an actual scientific calculator, a skill that they will carry with them throughout high school. It is important that students not rely on their cell phones 100%.
This project is very important to me because I am passionate about creating a positive, inviting classroom environment.
When students feel that they are inadequately prepared, it brings down their self esteem. I never want a student to feel poorly about themselves, especially for financial reasons. If I can provide my entire class with calculators, it will make all students feel included and prepared, without pinpointing specific students who do not have the supplies.
