This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a high school mathematics teacher that works with an under-served, highly minority student population. I teach Algebra and Geometry to 9th-12th grade students. My students come from low-income families, often with parents or guardians who have not studied math beyond Algebra 1, let alone attend college for mathematics. Although most of my students were not born into families that have excelled in academics, they have the capability and desire to learn not only Algebra 1, but all the courses up to and including Calculus.
In order to succeed in these math courses, my students need calculators. Most people take it for granted to own a scientific calculator, however, most of my students not only do not own one, but do not even know how to use some of the basic functions such as taking a square root.
In this day of extraordinary technological advances, my students need scientific calculators to help them perform basic calculations more efficiently. As they study Geometry and Algebra 2, the use of a calculator eliminates doing unnecessary calculations by hand so the students can spend more time learning the concepts and solving more complex problems than they might otherwise.
Your financial support will help make our classroom become a more accessible, creative space that truly facilitates and enhances their learning. Instead of leaving these low-income youth behind - you will be providing them with the learning tools to become critical thinkers in this rapidly changing society.
