Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th year teacher at an inner city school. I teach chemistry to some of the most AMAZING students in the city. The majority of my students are English Language learners and Hispanic. Their math skills are very low, and many of them will struggle to pass the CAHSEE in order to graduate high school. I am asking for a classroom set of calculators so that when I teach them the essential skills in chemistry, they have a calculator to complete problems. By completing my class successfully, students will gain the skills necessary to help them in college.
My students do not have very much money and I do not have enough to buy them all calculators (but I would if I could). I ask them to purchase their own but many students cannot afford even a 10 dollar calculator from Staples. When we get to challenging problems, students without calculators cannot be successful. However, the reason I go to school everyday is to help these amazing students find out that they can be successful in science! People have been telling these kids all their lives that they are not smart and cannot take challenging classes such as Chemistry. But you will never believe how a student's face lights up when I show them how to solve a challenging problem (and they didn't think they were going to be able to do it). They tell me, "Miss, that wasn't that hard!"
My honors and AP students will be able to complete at the national level with other students from this donation. They will able to solve challenging problems and get a head start for college! I have received some calculators from generous Donors Choose in the past. With this donation, I would have enough calculators in my classroom to sign them out to students for the year. This would be essential to my students' learning because they could finally borrow the calculators for homework instead of just classroom use.
Please consider donating a set of calculators for my students. Not only will they be successful in my chemistry class, they will develop the skills to pass the CASHEE (so they can graduate high school!) For many of these students they will be the first in their families to do so. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
