My Project
The Ti-84 Graphing Calculators will help bridge the technology gap between my Geometry students and make the use of technology equitable throughout the classroom. Currently, not all of my students have access to calculators and I want to make sure not only do all of my students in my Geometry class have access to my calculators, but that they all have the same calculator that will be used throughout their entire high school career and on any major state or placement tests.
The TI-84 Plus is the most common calculator in high schools across the U.S.
The TI-84 Plus has all of the features necessary for high school and many college classes. Geometry seems intimidating because it’s really the first time you deal with shapes and how to calculate them. In Geometry, I teach how to measure line segments, find distances and midpoints, measure and classify an angle based on the measurements, and of course, utilize the Pythagorean theorem. All of these things can be done on a TI-84 calculator. For visual learners, this is extremely useful. They provide a shape you can modify, edit, and manipulate to construct a figure and explore its properties.
The goal for the use of these calculators is to be able to make sure my students have the best advantages in their mathematical education. The Ti-84 is used on all major New Jersey standardized assessments. Students who have never seen or used the Ti-84 calculator are at a disadvantage to those who may use it regularly in class. I want to not only have my students benefit from the calculators during my lesson, but to also teach them test-taking strategies for state and placement exams.
