This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Enter my class, and you will see some of the most motivated and focused students in all of Los Angeles. They yearn to get every question right and show joy in their individual and collective success and growth as they wave their hands in excitement for one another.

As a new school, many of my students have arrived from under performing public schools that have left them 2 and 3 grade levels behind in reading, writing, and mathematics.

What were once a group of students who found math boring and "too hard," are now a group of students who smile and shout, "YESSS," when they hear they have a second block of math that day. My students are a collective bunch eager to strengthen their math muscles.

My Project

As my students prepare for our units in fraction operations (adding, subtraction, multiplying, and dividing) and converting measurements (inches to feet to yards, cups to pints to quarts to gallons, etc.) they are in need of calculators that will help them quickly check their answers during their station and independent work time. These calculators will also aid in strengthening student response time to multi-step word problems that focus on comprehension and problem solving skills.

These calculators will not only help my students dive deeper into the content and receive immediate feedback on their work, but give them a tangible example of the greater good in this world.

They are all dreaming of making a difference in their lives and the lives of their families and are confident that education is the key to that change. These tools will help my students build the necessary skills to leave middle school at or above grade level and inch their way closer to college.
