Calculators for C.'s Cool Kids!

Help me give my students a class set (30) TI-84 calculators so that they can complete their homework and study for tests at home.

My Students

My classroom is full of 9th grade Algebra and Honors Geometry students who are hardworking, full of life, and eager to learn. I have around 70 students in all but a maximum of 21 students in a class period. I have a mixture of students who have failed a math course previously, students who have missed 20-30 days in middle school, and students who have skipped a grade entirely all in the same class.

With these calculators, we can try to close the opportunity gap, which occurs in low-income schools.

My students have already beaten many odds by making it to high school. My students have had traumatic experiences from losing friends to gun violence, losing a close family member, homelessness, as well as not knowing where their next meal is coming from. However, they don’t let these circumstances define their lives. I have had an amazing turnout of students who complete homework every night and stay after school for tutoring. My students try their very best with the resources they have. My hope is these calculators help my students feel more successful at home when trying to study or complete homework.

My Project

With these calculators, my students will be able to check out calculators to take home to complete their homework and study for tests. I have a total of 66 students who are without TI-84 calculators at home. In my dream world, I would be able to give all of my students calculators to take home. However, a class set of calculators (around 30), which students can check out, would be life changing! We all know how expensive calculators are…

We are blessed to have a class set of calculators for my students to use during the school day.

However, I can’t tell you how many times I hear, "Can I take a calculator home to work on my homework?" and I have to say no because I need them for the next class period. It hurts me every time I have to turn down a student's desire to learn at home just because they don't have the opportunity to have a calculator we use in class. Just today I heard 3 times, “But we don’t have a calculator at home to do this.”

My hope is these calculators help my students feel more successful at home when trying to study or complete homework. My students will finally get the chance to practice with a tool that we use everyday in the classroom.
