Calculators For Children

My Students

Please help our children have the technology tools they need in order to be successful in school.

My students are all special education students who are of middle school age.

Their school is located in a rural community in Southern Alabama; exceptionally small, only about 360 students in the entire school which is grades 7-12. My students are enrolled in a pre-algebra class this school year, which begins introducing students to concepts such as scientific notation, exponents, and manipulation of very large or very small numbers which can be tedious to work with by hand.

My Project

With a graphing calculator to use in their basic skills class, which I am their teacher for, I can reteach, review, and constantly spiral back on concepts covered in their pre-algebra class, which they may struggle with. All students, and especially special education students need additional support in conjunction with their classroom instruction. By having a class set of graphing calculators in my resource room, students would benefit from additional instruction on mathematical topics. The students will not only become more proficient with manipulation of the calculator, but also improve their skills so they are not feeling lost or behind each day in math class. The graphing calculator can look intimidating to a young student, so by increased exposure and learning the buttons and procedural steps in a small setting students can increase their self-confidence.

The impact of this project will not only benefit the students in math class greatly, but also help to build or increase their self-confidence.

When one, feels defeated, or a goal seems to far out of reach, one may stop trying. I believe that if I can help teach these students in a small group in my resource class first how to use the calculator properly, and then also teach them the steps needed to solve various algebraic problems or scientific notation their confidence would rise.
