Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my classes come from diverse backgrounds and bring multiple abilities to the learning community. This year we are offering a more rigorous course to our Junior class to help prepare them for college level mathematics. Rather than taking Algebra 2, most of our population is taking Algebra 2/Precalculus. The students are rising to the challenge with enthusiasm and a curiosity for learning. By giving most of our students this opportunity, we have created heterogeneous classes full of different knowledge and strengths. The students are always working collaboratively and facilitating their own discussions to resolve mathematical disagreements.
Our students are in the hub of the tech industry, but are lacking the training of skills to be successful in the changing community.
We want students to be able to use technology that will guide their learning and expand their skill set. We often use graphing programs on Chrome-books, videos, and scientific calculators. In the classroom I would like to be able to provide any materials students need so they all have an equal opportunity to learn and be successful.
My Project
Many student are not able to afford a scientific calculator to use in class. This results in students sharing calculators and often learning new formats of different calculators every time they use one. Rather than them using the calculator to help their learning, they are spending time trying to decode each model.
They are making mistakes because they are not sure how to use the calculator even when they understand the procedures.
This gives a greatest disadvantage to my students with learning disabilities, bcause the inconsistency makes it difficult for them to focus. By having the same reliable calculators that all students can be trained to use, we will be able to focus the learning back to the math.
