Today's math classroom looks quite different than what most of us remember. One of the biggest changes has been the incorporation of calculators as part of the learning process. With current state testing mandates, it is necessary for the school to provide a calculator for each student.
My students are a motivated group of 7th and 8th graders from across the city of Philadelphia.
We are a high-achieving K-8 public school, where academic rigor meets social and emotional well-being. My students rise to the challenges they face with motivation, positivity, and personal accountability.
My Project
Without a full class set of calculators, my students will not remain competitive with their peers in other schools which are are able to provide a calculator to each student. I view this project as a "necessity," not a "want." My students deserve this equal opportunity. Please consider that 84% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Thank you!
Having a set of working calculators will enable my students to smoothly transition into their math lessons.
It has become a worry each day for the students whether or not they will receive a working calculator, or if they will have to share with a partner (which often diverts attention away from the necessary concepts). When each student has a reliable calculator, we can focus on the importance of the curriculum rather than the lack of resources.
