My Students
Can you imagine being the only student in a high school algebra class that has never had the opportunity to use a scientific calculator? If we do not improve the access of low-income students to calculators and other subject specific technology, we will never truly close the achievement gap.
I teach some of the hardest working students in an urban school district.
These are 10 year olds that wake up before the sun, spend 10 hours a day at school, and go home with up to two hours of homework in their book bags. My students show a genuine enthusiasm for learning, overcoming all kinds of obstacles to make 1-2 years growth in math by enduring 90 minute classes, and smiling through most of it. My students inspire me to give them everything I have and reach out to get more so that they can have the same educational opportunities as their suburban neighbors. It is my mission to prepare them to compete with students that go to school in more affluent neighborhoods.
My Project
By having calculators that are developmentally appropriate for 10 year old students, students would be able to see and fix mistakes that they have made in simple calculations. This technology would allow students to self-assess, and correct their own work. It would allow for independent and critical thinking as well as lend itself to differentiation for students that struggle. If students were able to use calculators on a daily basis, we would be able to attack more complicated materials, even if some students were struggling with basic facts. Having calculators in the classroom would also improve student confidence in their answers, and their ability to use technology in a beneficial way.
This project is so important in leveling the playing field between urban and suburban districts.
Simply being exposed to the technology that so many other students have access to allows my students to compete for spots at competitive high schools and the world beyond. Help me to prepare my students for a world that is infused with technology, and allow them to be proficient within that world.
