My Students
I work in a small charter school on the southeast side of Chicago, in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Our school is located a few blocks from where the Obama Presidential Library is going to be located.
100% of my students identify as African-American or of a mixed racial background, 84% of my students come from low-income backgrounds, and over the past five years, 100% of our students have graduated and been accepted to college.
It is our goal to affirm, challenge, and support our students--not to control them--and to set them up for independent success upon graduation.
My Project
These calculators (and associated tools) will aid my students in mastering the challenging topic of geometry! Most of my students cannot afford a calculator, and we will be using them on a daily basis to ensure they have the same access as other students in the country. In addition to basic arithmetic, these calculators will enable to us expand beyond overwhelming trig tables. We'll be using these tools to discuss the huge number of trigonometric applications in the world, including GPS systems! We will be using the document camera to highlight students' work, focusing on excellent examples and classic mistakes.
Access to these tools will allow us to springboard our education into the 21st century for constructions, transformations, trigonometry, and so much more!
