Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many students in my ninth grade Algebra class have difficulties with basic arithmetic skills(terms tables, finding the percent, changing percent to decimal -to fraction , order of operations etc) yet they are expected to perform in grade level and pass a state test on Algebra I in order to graduate high school.
Having a class set of state testing approved calculators makes teaching and working on grade level skills so much easier for my students.
We won’t have to worry about the time tables in order to find factors for polynomials. They will develop calculator skills that will give them an edge to work problems out. It does create a certain dependency on the calculators, but it assures them a way to work out problems instead of immediately giving up.
My students are low performing, some have learning disabilities, 99% qualify for free lunch and some are English Language Learners. Getting a calculator is not possible for some, others have bought a calculator earlier in middle school, but they re not the ones required. Some students calculators have been stolen.
