This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a busy classroom, students often spend a lot of time waiting for feedback from their teacher. With a basic tool like a calculator, students can learn to analyze their own work, thereby allowing them to use their time more wisely while strengthening their problem solving and analytical skills.
Our school is located in a largely immigrant, low-income community.
We are a public K-6 school serving roughly 600 students. Nearly 80% of our students are English learners and 100% qualify for free/reduced lunch (low-income indicator). Our classroom reflects the larger community surrounding the school. Our students are eager to be the best they can be.
My Project
As a basic tool, calculators can have a place in student learning. On one level, calculators can allow students to get instant feedback on their work, without having to wait for the one adult in the classroom to make their way around a classroom of potentially 30+ students.
On a deeper level, giving students calculators allows them to self-monitor their learning. When students are able to independently find feedback on their work, they are also forced to analyze their work in order to identify faulty logic and then attempt a solution to their problem.
Giving students access to a basic tool can help on multiple levels.
It allows the teacher increased freedom for more small group/individualized time for students without being pulled in 30 different directions. It also allows students to become independent thinkers. Calculators enable students to self-correct their thought process so they can take more responsibility of their own learning.
