This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a magnet secondary high school that focuses on marine and environmental science. Students interested in attending must go through an application process. Once accepted, they are part of a diverse, gifted, and motivated learning environment.
Students at our school are eager to learn and give back to their community.
They jump into a rigorous schedule that includes AP classes and Dual Enrollment classes, to get a better understanding of our world in hopes of contributing to their society.
My Project
The best way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. In our Calculus class, some problems require a graphing calculator to solve problems because they are too complex to do by hand. In an ideal class, all my students have the same calculator, so that we can help each other learn to use it. Unfortunately, not all my students can afford a graphing calculator. Thus, I would like to start building a class set.
These powerful graphing calculators will be used to find derivatives, complete integrals, solve real-world problems, and to save my students time on their AP Calculus Exam.
The confusion of how to get two different calculators to complete the same task would be eliminated, and thus would save class time. Lastly, some students would be able to practice using it on their own time, in order to figure out how to more efficiently use it to pass their AP exam.
My goal is to one day have enough calculators for all my students so that they can all have an equal opportunity to be successful on their AP Calculus exams.
