I am requesting a new set of calculators for my classroom. My old set bit the dust and needs to be replaced. I am asking for a specific TI model that is solar so that batteries will no longer be an issue. I am hoping this set will last longer.
A group of my students are currently participating in Academic Team Competitions and the calculator model I am requesting is one of only two models allowed during a meet.
The calculators I have selected are the preferred model for computing answers quickly, but we don't have a this model for students to use at our school. That is the main reason I am asking for calculators this time of the year. I want to give my students the best chance at being competitive. But, the calculators' use will go well beyond the academic team this year. I will use these calculators in my classroom with all of my students during the regular school day. They will be put to good use!
So many students assume they do not need a calculator because they have a phone, but when they get to classroom tests, and even more importantly, state standardized tests and the SAT, they suddenly find they don't know how to find all of the buttons they need on a regular calculator. That is another reason I find it so valuable to have a classroom set available for students to use for practice.
