My Students
Imagine taking a test that will determine if you graduate from high school or not. Now, imagine taking the math portion of that test with a calculator with functions and buttons you have never seen before. That is exactly what our students are having to do.
Our students are some of the most courageous individuals you would ever meet.
Everyday, they have to fight battles to make it to school. Some have to battle their parents who would prefer them to fail than succeed. Some battle their children because they have to get them up to take them to daycare so they can attend school. Others battle the crime-ridden streets just to make it here. However, they find ways to win these battles to better themselves through education. Our school is located in a large city in Ohio, less than a mile from "the nation's most dangerous neighborhood". We are an "economically disadvantaged" school with close to 100% of students coming from minority groups.
My Project
Due to budget constraints, we are asked to purchase cheaper scientific calculators for everyday math use. Then, our students are unable to figure out the OGT calculator when it comes time to take the test. The calculators we are requesting are the exact model, just different color, as the Ohio Graduation test calculator. By using these calculators on a daily basis, students will be better prepared to take the timed math portion of the OGT.
By helping my students to achieve their goals of passing the math graduation test, you quite possibly could be saving a life.
By graduating, students are able to pursue things in life that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to do. This may help a student from homelessness, life on the streets, lives of crime, etc. You will be giving these students a chance at success...something many have never felt. hide»
