This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

CAKE (Culinary Arts and Kitchen Experience) has been in full swing for the last five years at my school but our original equipment is now getting old, like me!

My low income, inner city high school juniors and seniors love to learn and that includes how to cook both low cost and healthy meals.

There is always a long line of applicants waiting to sign up for this enrichment class and students are willing to give up their Saturdays to come and share their enthusiasm for food with me.

My Project

The class teaches students how to prepare and cook affordable and healthy meals, something that will help them trough their college life and beyond. The six cooking hot plates will replace those that were generously provided by Donors Choose support in the past and will enable at least another 120 students to learn the skills needed to cook.

With my first CAKE students now graduated from their four year colleges, they have embarked on careers they may have only dreamed of, based on there ethnic and income background.

I hope that CAKE has taught them the value of education and that the skills they learned in this fun and fulfilling class will help them and future participants, continue to impact their own lives as well as the lives of others.
