This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income school district in the Bronx, my students are faced with numerous challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I strive to keep things as simple and easily accessible as possible, to be able to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Many of my students are in the process of applying to colleges and universities, both in and out of New York City.
As all of these students are bilingual, we are hoping to earn money to be able to earn college credit simple for speaking and/or knowing a second language by allowing them the chance to take the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) examination, at a cost of $80-per-student. By simply doing what they do every day, they can lessen the stress of their college transition by earning anywhere from 6-12 college credits, transferable to just about any college in the United States. I may not be able to control their choices of colleges, however, I can certainly do what I can to provide them with as many chances as possible to maximize their academic potential.
My Project
Many of my students have had great success on many state and local exams. So much so that they have become too accustomed to certain styles of examination and have difficulty deviating from what they have already been exposed to. Having taken the CLEP exam myself, I know first hand how nerve-wracking it can be. I'm requesting 30 CLEP exam review books - a standard classroom set size - to be used among the entire senior class. With these books, students will be able to listen to academic audio and practice academic listening to audio conversations to boost their academic language listening confidence.
My students need as much practice listening to a variety of Spanish speakers and reading a wide(r) variety of sources using proven collegiate learning strategies.
The use of these review books would give my students a much needed boost of confidence in their own home language capabilities and the collegiate level. Students who are confident in their home language abilities will also be confident in their new language abilities, which will prepare them to face the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
