Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten classroom is full of wonderfully eager young learners excited to be here each and every day! Our school is a Title I school with a predominantly Hispanic demographic (98%). Many of my students come from families who have either recently arrived to the United States from another country or speak little to no English. Despite the presence of hardships, these little ones may face at home they still walk in through my classroom doors each morning curiously excited for whats in store that day. My students know how passionate I am about teaching language arts, reading, and science and I strive to amaze and engage them each day.

My Project

As a Kindergarten reading teacher, I am tasked with the incredible responsibility of exposing my students to the amazing world of literacy! So many of my little ones enter their kindergarten year with such a minimal exposure to phonics and in addition a large number of those students are English language learners. Creating a lasting foundation is vital to help bridge the gaps between emergent and fluent. Due to the fact that my school is part of a Cambridge Primary Program, much of my curriculum is facilitated through active and engaging instructional activities, which oftentimes require a multitude of supplemental materials. Having literacy games, visual vocabulary, sight word cards, interactive phonemic manipulatives and an area to store and organize it all will really help us achieve our goals of being the confident and prepared readers I know we can be! Each item being requested is an essential tool or strategy that will help build essential phonemic and writing skills beneficial in helping them prepare for the SAT-10 (standardized test) as well as paving the way for success in first grade. I can't begin to tell you how exciting and rewarding it is to see a child read and comprehend print for the first time, which is what makes Kindergarten such a special year for young minds! My students make me so proud and are so eager to learn that any helpful tool or resource I can provide to them is one I will cherish and use daily.
