This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend middle school in Norwalk, Connecticut with over seventy-five percent of the school is on free or reduced-price lunch. Norwalk is an urban area with many of my students live below the poverty level and cannot afford even the basic supplies. My students have a higher need for socio-emotional tools to help aid them in coping with school stresses and to become successful in their classes. Our students are creative, innovative, and true consumers of knowledge. My students are excited about learning and thrive when given the supplies to complete assigned tasks. As the G/T teacher I work closely with science and social content teachers. Students are allowed to work in my classroom to expand on their ideas for student driven projects with core content.

Many students complete projects throughout the school year without many of the basic supplies or how-to knowledge.

This how-to knowledge includes the basic structure and templates on how to create books and e-books. Without this essential knowledge, students do not have the ability to achieve success. My students enjoy hands-on learning. The excel when provided opportunities beyond the traditional paper and pencil lessons.

My Project

Storytelling is a powerful tool for students to verbalize concepts of the past, present, and future. Students are learning that the written word is a powerful way to express our thoughts, emotions, and understanding of the world from our perspective. I am looking to provide a structure for creating realistic books through the platform of Book Creator. Students have innovative story ideas but lack the templates to help design their books.

In my classroom, students are using the theme of diversity, justice, and action to define concepts of voting rights, food equality for all, freedom of speech, and more.

Creating e-books can provide students with the platform to share with a large audience key concepts for responsible citizenship and ensure student voice. Students can share their final products through social media to show that through responsible research, anyone can promote non-bias information as we approach the 2020 election season.

This grant will not only provide students with this opportunity but can also allow my students to author their own books to be presented and reviewed by their peers. Students have created self-driven projects that serve as their unit assessments and part of their student portfolios. Students are required to make their projects unique, colorful, and appealing to their ideal audience. This is extremely difficult to do without proper guidance and structure. Teachers are given a very limited allowance to purchase supplies. This grant will give us the opportunity to create books and e-books of our own to be able to share our stories with the world.
