Help me give my students books to discuss and a button maker to show the world what we have learned.

My Students
Our high school is a Title I, urban school with a large immigrant population. The school offers opportunities including CTAE, STEM, AP, and IB. The Media Center is the heart of the school, providing books, e-books, research, educational technology, digital citizenship, and general help. Our students are active participants in choosing books or comics and helping teachers learn to use the equipment. The room is a place where students can come to work, relax, read, and even visit. The Media Center extends beyond the walls to the community.
My Project
With the return to in-person learning, we need to give students a place to both talk about what they have seen and experienced and an outlet. There will be two book clubs using the books Stamped by Jason Reynolds and the graphic novel Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Yang. The next step is creating a tangible item to help students process their own experiences and what they have read.
Creating buttons provides a fun outlet to let students explore words, phrases, and images from the books we will explore together.
Literacy is more than reading; it's understanding. With these books and a button maker, we can explore both.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
