My Project

My students receive occupational therapy to help them participate in their education. Well chosen sensory tools are necessary in their therapy sessions, to help them acquire the skills for success.

Many students who receive occupational therapy demonstrate motor and sensory difficulties that affect their ability to remain seated.

They present a continuous need to hold something in their hands, fidget and move around. This occurs while they are being instructed to remain in their seat and keep their hands still. To accommodate this very real sensory-motor need, it is recommended for some students to utilize a sensory tool in class to help them learn. A weight provides sensory input to the muscles and brain, providing a neurological message of safety and comfort. The weighted lap pad would remain safely on their lap, while they are now better able to focus on the lesson. The puppy design will be appealing and add an additional message of relaxation and joy, given that so many students feel connected to their pets.

Additionally, the Buttons Pizzaz tool is a necessary tool to help children learn to manage their buttons independently. Many students struggle with insufficient fine motor strength and dexterity to pinch and insert buttons into button holes. This adaptive buttoning tool will provide the prerequisite practice to facilitate success in this self-care occupation.

These therapeutic tools can be the determining factor that enables a child to participate fully alongside their classmates, while feeling wonderful and enjoying their school experience.
