My Project

ButtonUp is a hands-on creative project designed to engage students in designing, producing, and utilizing custom buttons for a variety of educational and extracurricular purposes. The project centers around a button-making station—equipped with a button press machine, design tools (digital or analog), and materials—giving students the opportunity to create personalized 1”–3” pin-back buttons.

These buttons can serve a multitude of class-related functions:

Visualizing classroom jobs or roles

Serving as positive behavior incentives or goal trackers

Promoting school-wide campaigns (e.g., kindness week, reading challenge)

Supporting classroom themes or projects (e.g., science fair, book reports)

Students take ownership of the creative process by brainstorming ideas, designing button graphics, printing, assembling, and even marketing or distributing their buttons.

What It’s Used For:

Creative Expression: Students design custom buttons with original artwork, slogans, or symbols.

Classroom Identity & Motivation: Buttons can be used to display team affiliation, achievements, or leadership roles.

Project Enhancement: Buttons are created as part of thematic units (e.g., literary characters, historical figures, science topics).

Community Engagement: Buttons can support advocacy, awareness, and school spirit events.

Entrepreneurial Activities: Students can simulate or participate in mini-business ventures by “selling” buttons during school fairs or events (real or mock currency).

Learning Objectives:

By participating in ButtonUp, students will be able to:

Creative & Design Thinking:

Apply the design process to create visually appealing and purposeful button designs.

Use digital or manual tools to create, edit, and finalize graphic designs.

Understand elements of visual communication such as symbolism, typography, and color theory.

Operate a button-making press safely and correctly.

Present and explain design choices clearly to peers or wider audiences.

Cross-Curricular Integration:

Incorporate academic content into button designs

Connect design choices to broader classroom themes or units.

Entrepreneurial & Organizational Skills:

Organize & manage materials & workflows for production.
