My Students

Bordering Clarkson, Georgia, once called "The Ellis Island of the South," our school is brimming with cultural and language diversity. Our students are from all over the world and bring a variety of unique experiences and perspectives that often help turn confusion into clarity in the classroom.

Filled with laughter, smiles, and an enthusiasm for new learning experiences, my kindergarten students enjoy taking on challenges creating the next generation of problem solvers.

They love to dance, sing, help, read, and are joyous with every new accomplishment. Although my students are rich in diversity, 80% of our students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

My hope is that with your donations we can help ease the financial burden on our families and educators, enabling our teachers and community to focus on creating self-motivated lifelong learners!

My Project

We are learning about patterns in nature, living and non-living things, life cycles, and sequencing. We are also learning how to make observations that will help them to ask or answer questions and make predictions that will lead to more discoveries. Raising butterflies in our classroom would be a wonderful, inquiry-based way to join these concepts together.

Our students will act as the natural scientists they are by recording their observations of the butterfly larvae, posing questions, and referencing informational texts and life-like figurines to bolster their understanding.

Each of our 3 kindergarten classes will have their own butterfly nursery to care for and observe.

Hosting butterfly nurseries will support our students with literacy and language acquisition by making abstract ideas such as the circle of life concrete and by encouraging all students to actively engage in our learning activities. The figurines will provide students with the ability to show what they know via use of modeling and manipulating objects. If made possible, this unit will connect our classroom studies to our students' knowledge of the real world.
