Butterfly Life Cycle Kits for Bilingual Students!

My Students

I teach a K-2 bilingual class in an urban school with 85% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are brand new to the United States. My students enter my classroom with little or no English. Many of them have never had a school experience in their native country. It is my job to prepare them for the regular education classroom.

My students are currently from 4 different countries, speaking 3 different languages.

My students are all eager and excited to learn.

My Project

During remote learning, we have been noticing that some students are losing enthusiasm for school. I am hoping to inspire them and lift their spirits.

I hope to help brighten their days by having each child witness the amazing life cycle of the butterfly in their own homes.

The butterfly kit comes with five larva, a poster explaining the life cycle and a butterfly house for them to view their butterflies before releasing them.

I am currently working with a small group of students, so this project would allow EACH student to experience this awesome life cycle. All of my students have siblings, so the entire family will be able to enjoy this activity.

If we do return to in-person learning during this school year, I plan to keep one butterfly kit for use in our classroom. I would then share the remaining kits with other classrooms at my school.
