Butterflies, Tadpoles and Chicks

My students need 9 Life Cycles resources, including a Mini Digital Incubator, an InstaCage, a painted lady life cycle bio kit and a K'Nex Life Cycles set.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. P.'s classroom raised $793

This project is fully funded

I am a New York City school teacher. I have been teaching for eleven years. I love teaching tremendously. It is very rewarding when I see the academic growth of young learners. I currently serve as a cluster librarian/teacher for grades K-4. Our school community has a diverse student population of four hundred and fifteen students with diverse learning styles. Most of our students are predominantly come from homes with low socio economic background and 95% receive reduced fare lunch. I know that all of our children can be successful learners if they have the appropriate learning tools, resources and academic support. To meet the needs of the diverse learning styles of my school community, stimulating instructional strategies must be utilized and opportunities for real world/inquiry based learning must be provided.

My students would really love to study life cycles. They are very interested in learning about how animals and insects develop and grow over time. Therefore, I developed a cross curricular unit of study tied to New York State Standards integrating science and literacy instruction. My unit will support the needs of the special needs students, English language learners, and struggling readers. This project will enable me to provide my students with rich learning experiences that make learning come to life so that I can meet their diverse learning needs. Unfortunately the resources that my students and I need are not available.

My project needs an InstaCage friendly habitat for the chicks, a Life Cycles Theme Book Library from lake shore learning for our Life Cycles unit, a set of Life Cycles Science Vocabulary Readers with simple text, inviting photos and comprehension/skill building vocabulary, a mini digital Incubator, a Chick Life Cycle Exploration Set with a multilingual activity guide,a KID K'NEX® Life Cycles hands-on kit with colorful, engaging KID K'NEX® pieces to build 9 unique models demonstrating the life cycles of A tadpole and a frog, 2 and 3-D caterpillars, a butterfly, and a moth, a chicken and an egg, specialty pieces with building cards showing how each model is built with life cycle diagrams and pictures, a Frog Life Cycle Stages Set which depicts the 4 stages (egg, tadpole, frog with tail, and adult bullfrog), Painted Lady Life Cycle Model with an accurately detailed egg, larva, chrysalis, and adult butterfly, a painted Lady Life Cycle BioKit® Includes 50 to 65 larvae and a butterfly cage.

My students will gain a real world understanding of the stages of development of the tad pole, butterfly and chicken. They will have a first hand knowledge of life cycles using live organisms, print rich literature and life sized models. They will understand how insects and animals are similar and different, be able to compare and contrast information using a variety of instructional strategies, ask questions, conduct research, organize information and share their ideas and understanding of topics learned.
