My students need 25 copies of Bullying in Schools and art supplies, including markers and paint, to create handmade butterflies for the Holocaust Museum.
I teach in a diverse district where more than 62% of the students here receive free or reduced lunches. They face daily struggles, including being the victims of bullying in the classroom and the community.
Although the poverty level here is high, many of the juniors I teach have big dreams for the future and plan to attend college.
Some of these college-bound students are reluctant readers and some of them have experienced bullying. I hope to address both of these issues by reading Bullying in Schools during our Holocaust unit.
My Project
Every high school student has heard of and studied the Holocaust. I want this tragic event, the epitome of bullying, to become more than memorized statistics. More than 1.5 million children died because of the Holocaust, and the Holocaust Museum has created a project to help students understand the magnitude of this travesty. Students are being asked to submit handmade butterflies to the Butterfly Project. After the museum receives 1.5 million butterflies, one to represent each child, the museum will display them at a venue of their choice. Before my students' butterflies are sent to the museum for the exhibit, we will display them in our building. They will each be cut down to represent each of the children who entered concentration camps and never made it out. To make this project a reality, we need art supplies like markers, paint, and pipe cleaners to create the butterflies.
The students will benefit from learning that the Holocaust changed our world.
The people involved were real. They had families and jobs and hobbies. Students will have a broader understanding of how important issues of racism, bullying and poverty are in our own community. In addition, I plan to pair the reading of our Holocaust literature with Bullying in Schools. I hope, that by adding this piece of literature, we will be able to discuss issues of bullying in the classroom and community.
