My Students
My students, aged 12 - 21, are a very special group of young people enrolled in a class designated as "medically fragile." They have a variety of challenges, including vision, hearing and orthopedic impairments, and cognitive delays. All of my students are nonverbal communicators, and all use wheelchairs for mobility.
In order to provide hands-on learning experiences, project-based learning is the primary means of providing equity and inclusion for my students with profound disabilities.
Lessons are designed to address all modalities, according to each student's unique needs, and best means of accessibility are always considered.
My Project
Each student will receive a butterfly habitat with painted lady butterfly larvae and food. As a class, we will go through the steps in the process of raising and releasing 'our own' painted lady butterflies. Through this activity, my students will share the uplifting experience of nurturing and protecting something so small and seemingly insignificant, but exceedingly important as pollinators in our growing gardens. Through collaboration with our augmentative communications specialist and speech pathologist, we will develop vocabulary to discuss our feelings as we share this experience.
The sounds of caterpillars munching, colors of butterfly wings and the soft fluttering as the wings stir the air - all invoke feelings of well-being and peace.
Although we are separated physically by distance learning, we will raise our butterflies simultaneously, together as a class, and release them (hopefully) on the same day during our online class, improving our sense of belonging to our class.
