Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It is hard to dance to the music when you can't even hear it! And even harder to sing a long! My students are tired of dancing and singing to silence or music that they can barely hear. I work at a fabulous elementary school in a very under-served community in a big city. My students see me once a week to learn as much performing arts as they possibly can. And that includes lots of dancing and singing!

My 'classroom' is all over the school and most of the spaces I use are BIG. So big, that a normal portable boom box just doesn't do it. The sound gets lost in the space and the students can't hear a thing as they try to dance and sing.

I'm tired of creatively using silence. I want something that will play really, really, REALLY loud music that can be heard in the cafeteria, the gym, and even throughout the auditorium (and still be portable)! I've done my research and the Kicker ik501 ipod dock looks like the loudest thing out there. We need it. I want my students to be inspired to move to the amazing music I play them. Hearing a variety music will help them find a variety of ways to express them selves through movement. Understanding the counts in music, and listening for cues while doing choreography will increase their focus and math skills. Music loud enough to hear is also essential for singing. Last year we had to rehearse our graduation song (sung by the entire graduating 5th grade of about 140) in groups of about fifteen. After the ceremony, a few students told me that hearing the music loud enough to sing to was the best part. It shouldn't be that way.

If you help me make music a part of these students lives you will be making a lot of young performers very happy. Music will make so many of our dance lessons better and allow us to do dances we couldn't have done before. Music will let us feel the power of singing in a large group, in a large space, and our voices will fill the space with joy. Please give us joy. I want these children to have moments of beauty in their chaotic and often challenging lives. Dance and music can do that.
