I teach French I and II to 200 of the most amazing students in the state of Maryland.
However, being in a high poverty urban environment, most of our students are an average of four or more grade levels behind in their reading and writing abilities. This significantly impacts their chances for success in an increasingly competitive college environment. Without extra effort and increased exposure to literature, it is unlikely that our students will be able to catch up.
To help our students grow as readers and writers, our school is trying to implement reading and writing across the curriculum. By introducing my students to a classic work of French philosophic literature, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "The Little Prince," I hope to both increase their reading and writing abilities and inspire them look beyond the literal meanings of the words on a page. With copies of the book in both French and English, my students will have an opportunity to study the inner workings of a language, helping them to think critically and analytically about the way we express ourselves.
Your help in bringing these books into my students' hands will ensure that they have every opportunity to move forward in their learning. With your help, my students can have meaningful exposure to a beautiful piece of literature that will help them overcome the obstacles that stand between them and success in the future.
