Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the librarian at a medium size urban public high school in New York City. The school community is as diverse as any you would find. Many of the students come from families that are economically disadvantaged, and many of them are first generation Americans, and will be the first in their family to go to college. My library is very busy, and the students who frequent it travel and study in entirely mixed groups. If I need hope for the future I look at the kids in the library - they are different from each other, and are friends with each other, and help each other.
They are kind and studious and tolerant, and hungry for information and knowledge and books!
When school opened this year after the pandemic experience, my students came to the library immediately, the first day, the first period, to borrow books. Real books, with pages and bindings and spines. The books have been flying out of the library. Many many books that the library owned before the pandemic are gone, and these students leave the library disappointed.
My Project
The first day that my school reopened after the pandemic shutdown, I had students come to the library to borrow books. There were students who had never been in the building before - 9th and 10th graders who entered high school for the first time. They found their way to the fourth floor library, in a large confusing high school, their very first day, and left with books. This continued every day - the students who had been reading digitally for the past 18 months were so happy to be able to read physical books. There have been 1104 books borrowed by these students. The students keep coming to borrow books and we can't afford to lose this opportunity.
We need more books - we need to keep these flames burning brightly!
The students are leaving disappointed too many times - books in hand are worth much more than a promise!
