Busy Bees Need a Place to Land!

Help me give my students an opportunity to choose where and how they want to sit while they work.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, lap desks, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. When given the choice of seating, my students are more engaged in the lesson and their work.

Having the ability to exert extra energy in a close learning environment for first graders is priceless.

I have witnessed my students in both scenarios, chairs to desks and alternative seating, and what I have found is when given the opportunity to wiggle, wobble and shake, the children are able to better concentrate and focus. With a rigorous academic, bell to bell schedule, they need a chance to expel their pent-up energy while they learn. Ultimately, having a choice of seating, will help my students be more engaged in their learning experience.
