Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an urban high school which lacks the necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. I have taught here for 16 years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students. Over the years I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had. I strive to expose them to as many diversified artistic experiences as I can.
My Project
The students are often late to school due to factors relating to transportation. In order to get a bus pass you must live 2 miles from the school. This leaves many of our students with a long walk to school which often results in tardiness and absence depending on the conditions.
Many students walk long distances without good weather protection which leads to illness, tardiness, and sometimes students not coming at all when it is cold and wet.
Our urban school is in an area full of abandoned buildings and empty streets which can be unsafe. The bus passes would help to improve attendance because it will help get students to school safely, on time, and ready to succeed.
