This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can I ensure my students will be successful without the necessary materials needed to help them thrive? I teach at a title 1 school in East New York. My students are special needs students with disabilities such as speech and language, Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, Learning Disabled and Autism. Most of them are from Hispanic and/or African American backgrounds. They come from single-family homes, non-English speaking parents and have a low social economic status. All of these factors, are known to affect education drastically. Despite all the hardships my students may face when out of the classroom they still come to school with a smile on their face, ready to learn, every single day.
Although I can’t control their personal lives, I can control the experiences they have in my classroom.
I’d like to be able to provide them with the best experiences possible in order for them to have a successful future. My students are creative, energetic and very spontaneous. I am hopeful, that I’m inspiring them and leading them on a successful path with positive everyday experiences, but I need your help!
My Project
These materials will make my class much more sensory based. My students need to have more hands on activities throughout the school day. The sensory play table will boost my students confidence in decision making as they will be in compete control of their actions and experiences. It will also allow my students with poor social skills to have the opportunity to work side by side with a partner and learn to understand someone else’s viewpoint. The soft sensory balls could be used both inside the play tables and out. They will help my students feel less tense. The magnetic letters will help my lower level students with word study by building with their hands and can be used for letter recognition games. The soft building blocks will help my students develop mathematical skills (colors, shapes, sizes). It will also help their motor skills, logical thinking skills and creativity.
Having these materials available will drastically change the dynamics in my classroom.
Everyone learns in different ways and my students learn best when they use their hands to explore, create and built. With these materials, my classroom will accommodate the individuality of all my students. By donating to my project, you will be making a difference in my students education.
