Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Imagine opening a book that bursts with vibrant colors, textured prints, and creative surprises on every page. That’s the magic my Art 1 students will create through Gelli printing and explosion books. My students thrive best when they can explore, experiment, and express themselves through hands-on art making.

With the Gelli printing plates, brayers, texture ribs, and baby wipes we are requesting, students will create rich, layered textures and colors that can’t be achieved in a basic color theory painting lesson.

As of right now, we don’t have all of the necessary tools we need to fully explore color theory concepts—like complementary colors, warm and cool tones, and layering—while also learning the fundamentals of printmaking.

My goal is to expose students to both traditional and technical art skills while enhancing their overall art experience, even at the introductory level. I want my students to appreciate art, take creative risks, build confidence, and have fun in the process.

Most of my students are ninth graders, and together we’re reshaping a the visual arts program. Their previous teacher retired, and I’m working to revamp the program with fresh, creative learning opportunities. Many students shared in a beginning-of-year survey that it’s been a long time since they’ve taken art—or that they’ve never had the chance to work with printmaking. This inspires me to advocate for them and bring in resources our growing program needs.

With your support and obtaining these supplies to make this project possible, I know it will spark excitement and encourage students to collaborate, learn, and create. I want to give all of my students the tools to turn their creativity into something beautiful and interesting. Let's fill my classroom with color, imagination, and the joy of making art that truly pops off the page!
